Definition and Function
VAT (Value Added Tax) Number is the unique identifier assigned to a taxable person (business) or non-taxable legal entity that is officially registered for VAT. This number is crucial for tracking transactions and ensuring tax compliance across jurisdictions.
Importance in Cross-Border Logistics
A valid VAT number is a fundamental requirement for importing goods into the European Union (EU) or the UK, necessary for customs clearance and proper tax reporting.
• VAT numbers are country specific. If a company is importing or exporting to multiple EU countries, a separate VAT number is required for each country of operation.
• For imports into the UK, a UK-specific VAT registration is necessary.
Acquisition and Payment
VAT numbers must be requested from the local tax authorities of the relevant EU countries or the UK. Most applications can be completed online.
Regarding payment, VAT will need to be paid upon import into the EU, unless the importer has a VAT deferment license (a common arrangement in the Netherlands). In the UK, VAT is due upon import unless the importer is registered for Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA).
Expert Advice
Due to the complexity of international tax laws and regional differences in deferred payment schemes (deferment licenses, PVA), always consult a qualified tax professional for specific guidance on VAT registration, liability, and payment schedules. Accurate tax compliance remains the responsibility of the importer.
